About the SAACs
Objectives in Establishing SAACs
- Fulfill one of the core goals of the Red Line Community Compact to create a more community-centered public involvement process for station design
- Create a collaborative working committee of community stakeholders, designers, planners, architects, and land-use experts to plan and design the Red Line stations
- Ensure the Red Line stations and the areas surrounding the stations enhance communities and provide a mutually safe environment for residents and future riders of the system
The SAACs Structure
- Each of the 20 proposed station areas will be assigned to a SAAC
- In some cases, a SAAC may be responsible for more than one station area, but this will depend on the level of interest expressed by community stakeholders
- Each SAAC will determine its individual organizational structure
Role of SAACs in Station Area Planning and Design
- The station area planning and design process will span a 15 month period from Fall 2010 until late 2011
- The SAACs will meet approximately every 4 to 6 weeks during the 15 month design period
- In addition, the SAACs will hold public meetings either individually or collectively with other SAACs
- These public meetings will give SAACs the opportunity to share and receive input on their work from each other and the wider public
- There will be a proposed schedule and structure for the station area planning and design process. However, it will ultimately be the responsibility of each SAAC to establish the best process for their particular station area.
- In order to advise the MTA on design decisions, members will be asked to explore these basic topics for their station area:
- Define the planning area of the station
- Establish a needs analysis by identifying strengths and weaknesses of the planning area
- Define goals and objectives for the planning area
- Develop a design concept for the station based upon each station's unique character
- Determine station locations
- Design detailed station elements
- Suggest the name for the station
- Provide input into other Red Line design elements near the station.
Anticipated Product from the SAACs Participation in the Station Area Planning and Design
- Design concepts for each station area
- Produce a "design map" for a unique, sustainable, user-friendly system that reflects each individual community
